Comebacks All the Way to Shanghai
Luca has managed to qualify for the Shanghai Masters, to be played next month in China. He did so with 3 very strong performances, two of which necessitated a comeback.
Starting out in the Last 96 against Nigel Bond, Luca made 2 centuries and a 70-break to beat the former world semi-finalist 5-2.
The last 64 provided a tricky encounter with David Gilbert, broadcast on the live stream (see the Video section of this website). After taking the first frame, Luca was 3-1 behind at the interval, but after that he never looked back, taking all the remaining frames for a 5-3 win, and yet another century.
The last 48 decided who will be on the plane to Shanghai, and it was Irishman Fergal O’Brien standing in Luca’s way, and predictably it was a very hard-fought match. Luca found himself once again 3-1 behind at the interval, and again produced a comeback to get back to 4-3 ahead. Fergal pulled out a classy break of 52 to keep the pressure on and bring the match to a decider. Luca took the change when it came to him, and an ice-cold 80-break sealed the match!
Well done, Luca, and good luck in Shanghai!
